In this screenprint project, I am trying to show how Chicago has progressed from the past to now, incorporating an efficient public transit system.
By including both the sketch of the train, street, building & stop sign, I am directly showing the juxtaposition between the present and the past. This is a modern & historical take on Chicago and its progress.
For this project, I used several screenprinting techniques, including printing photopositives onto a screen and reclaiming the screen 3 times.
For inspiration, I thought of Barbara Kruger, and I went through the Chicago History The museum’s online archive of photography. I was able to source the background image from that database, and I added my own twist on top of it. I think a visual strength of my print is the contrast of bright colors vs black & white, another nod to the juxtaposition of the past and present. Something that I would change next time is to remove the white layer from under the blue layer. I think it wasn’t necessary in retrospect, and the opacity would’ve added a cool overlay effect.
